Early Years and Childcare Team

The Early Years and Childcare team provide SEND support for Early Years settings.

Who are we?

What do we do?

The team have significant teaching experience in Early Years learning environments, including identifying and teaching children with a range of additional needs.

Within your setting their role might be:

  • Supporting with completion of a variety of SEND paperwork and advising on processes
  • Individual child observations with feedback and written reports
  • Whole setting/Group observations with feedback and written Notes of Visit
  • Review observations with feedback around progress and next steps with written report
  • Supporting SENCo to identify next steps in learning, write SMARTA targets
  • Liaising with SENCO, key person and parents to discuss recommendations/outcomes, next steps
  • Supporting SENCo in setting up and monitoring of targeted provision/ intervention programmes
  • Working directly with children with additional needs during observations, modelling of strategies
  • Attendance at transition meetings for school starters or room by room changes within setting/school
  • Delivering of Early Years SEND related training in identified areas of needs to EYFS staff (Part/ whole day/ staff meetings) e.g. Autism Education Trust training, Visuals, emotional regulation etc
  • Supporting and challenging continuous quality and improvement within the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) Framework/environment
  • Support and advice on the setting’s Universal SEND offer, general class based/ room based observation with general recommendations
  • SEND focused learning walks, creating an Inclusive environment e.g. Inclusive Classroom Profile (ICP) Audit/ Sensory Environment audits/ checklists – Feedback with areas of strength and identified actions
  • Identifying appropriate intervention for children at risk of developmental/communication delay

Wider roles/ responsibilities:

  • Delivering termly SENCO network updates
  • Writing and delivering a variety of Early Years/ SEND related training courses on a termly basis
  • Multi- Agency liaison and working to support children and families
  • Multi- Agency liaison through monitoring of Health Notifications and feeding information/ reports into MDA pathways for children on caseload
  • Support with and attendance at Team around the Family meetings
  • Attendance and supportive role with Early Years Inclusion Panel (EYIP)
  • Overview of September cohort transitions for children identified with SEND • General advice/ support through emails, phone calls, Practitioner Advice Line

Who can access the service?

Core offer/services available to Childminders, Early Years Practitioners/SENCos and Managers working within PVI/ Maintained School Nursery (pre-school aged children).

Traded offer/ services available to Reception classes (school- aged children).
