Transition to Primary School

On this page you will find information and guidance about transition between Early Years settings and Primary School. Change can often bring feelings of worry and uncertainty about what's happening next. By the end of this page you will have the information you need to take the next step.

The transition from early years to primary school is a significant milestone for both children and their families. This phase involves adapting to new environments, routines, expectations, and relationships.

For children, this transition marks a shift from a play-based learning approach to a more structured education setting. While this can be exciting, it may also bring feelings of uncertainty or anxiety. Supporting children during this period is crucial to help them feel confident, secure, and ready to embrace new challenges. Open communication between early years settings, primary schools, and families can ensure a smoother transition.

Nurseries/Early Years settings will notify parent carers when to apply for a school place. Children usually start the reception year at primary school at the start of September following their fourth birthday. Children born between 1 September 2020 and 31 August 2021 will start primary school from September 2025. Parents need to apply for a reception place by 15 January 2025. If a child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) the application closing date is 31 October 2024.

Once your child's place is confirmed, the SENCo at their current Early Years setting will reach out to the Primary school. This collaborative process relies on open, two-way communication between both settings. SEND paperwork will be transferred, and important meetings will be arranged to ensure a smooth transition.
